6 problems you can expect when you don’t have clear goals

In over 13 years of coaching and many more years of managing small businesses and numerous projects, I have seen the same problems surface again and again when people don’t have clear goals.

Goals are an integral part of our everyday life but often we act on habitual or unconscious goals. Sometimes this is useful: we don’t need a plan for our goal to make a cup of tea for example. But some of our goals are far too important to be approached out of habit, confusion or fear.

Here are 6 key problems you can expect to be familiar with when you don’t set clear goals:

  1. Missing new opportunities because you are doing things on autopilot.
  2. Working on detailed tasks before you have clearly defined what success is which turn out to be unnecessary or ineffective, (sounds crazy but a LOT of people do this).
  3. Confused or frustrated teams and project partners because no-one can agree on what is important.
  4. Having no way to measure your progress because your destination is so vague.
  5. Wasted energy and resources.
  6. Low performance or no results: the biggest problem of all.

There’s also a deeper issue underlying poor goal setting and that is the lack of a clear Vision: your Ultimate Goal. I’ll be tackling how to create both a powerful vision and clear goals in my workshop at Morley College, London. In just one day you can be focused and inspired to take action.
